“Mason, who won the school mock election?”
“Mitt Romney.” Pause. “I didn’t vote.”
“Why not?”
“Because I don’t really like politics. I don’t plan on ever being a registered voter.”
“Uh… why not? Politics are kind of what decide how your country is run, my friend.”
“Yeah… but politics are also what tear you apart from your friends.”
That sums up this election in a nutshell, I think. I’m very relieved the election is over, mostly because I feel like the tension level might go down a little bit in my neighborhood, at my kids’ schools, in my family, on Facebook… but look what we are teaching our kids, America. We can do better than this.
This is unfortunately not the first time I heard how children react to the election. I’ve seen a few status updates already about children fighting and being mean to others about their choices (or should I say, parents choices?). I told my children that it’s important to make your own decisions and to respect what others think. I’m glad it’s over for now and hope people can concentrate on the important issues facing our country!!!
