Driving in traffic to pick up the dog from his $200+ vet appointment tonight after a day that included a napless baby, a dead car battery, an out of town husband, a lot of PTA, and fighting children:
The 5 year old: “Mom, you never let us eat inside restaurants.”
“Pardon me? What?”
“You never let us eat inside restaurants.Like McDonald’s.” Pause. “It’s so unfair.”
Shaking my head bemusedly, “I love you, buddy.”
“Well, I hate you.”
And… SCENE.
Wow, you’re such a cruel, unfair mommy! No McDonald’s?
Isn’t it just when the pets start getting sick or needing medical attention that life breaks you down? My Boston Terrier needed to go to the vet’s last week (she inexplicably couldn’t walk for several hours), at the same time that my son had an ear infection and I needed to finish writing due for my dissertation, and, when we got home and suddenly she was better, I kept saying to this silly dog, “Really? Why? Why?”
OMG! It’s like Mason from 7 years ago! Poor Allison. He’ll appreciate you one day. 🙂
We’re getting a lot of: “I am NOT your friend and I’m never going to be your friend!” and/or “I am never ever even going to look at you again!”
Good times! 🙂
My little guy is 4 (and a half, apparently that extra half is very important!) and we’re starting to have a lot of these conversations. I hear “that’s not fair”, “this is totally boring”, and “you’re not my best friend right now!!” all too often. Hopefully this phase is short-lived!!
